Hi, I am Ananda Breed
Professor in Theatre, School of Fine & Performing Arts

Ananda is Professor in Theatre; Principal Investigator of an AHRC GCRF Network Plus project entitled Mobile Arts for Peace (MAP): Informing the National Curriculum and Youth Policy for Peacebuilding in Kyrgyzstan, Rwanda, Indonesia and Nepal; and Co-Investigator of another AHRC GCRF Network Plus project entitled Changing the Story. Her research interests include performance studies, peace and conflict studies, memory studies, and transitional justice studies.

Ananda’s role

Ananda is actively engaged as a practitioner and academic in a number of international networks addressing Global Challenges; including Working Group Leader for the GCRF Network entitled Building Cultures of Peace in Rwandan Schools. She was the recipient of AHRC GCRF including AHRC Follow On Impact award Ubwuzu: Shaping the Rwandan National Curriculum through Arts, AHRC GCRF Development Award, and AHRC GCRF Inception Award. She has served as Co-Investigator for AHRC Changing the Story projects Connective Memories: Intergenerational Expressions in Contemporary Rwanda and Examining Interpretations of Civil National Values made by Young People in Post-Conflict Settings (Kenya and Nepal).

A bit of background

Ananda works closely with partnering organisations Foundation for Tolerance International, Institute of Research and Dialogue for Peace, University of Rwanda, Atma Jaya Catholic University, Tribhuvan University, Human Rights Film Centre, University College London and Open University in addition to numerous artists and young people from around the world. Publications include: Performing the Nation: Genocide, Justice, Reconciliation (Seagull Books, 2014); Performance and Civic Engagement (Palgrave Macmillan, 2018); The Routledge Companion to Applied Performance (Routledge, 2020); and Making Culture in (Post) Socialist Central Asia (Palgrave Macmillan, 2020).

And finally…

Ananda loves learning about new cultures and the adaptation of cultural forms for dialogue and peacebuilding. She is currently participating in numerous online workshops and performances. Hobbies include running, doing yoga, and playing with her two daughters.
