Hi, I am Dominic Symonds
Professor of Musical Theatre and Director of Research in the School of Fine and Performing Arts

Dominic is Professor of Musical Theatre and Director of Research in the School of Fine and Performing Arts. He also writes and directs professionally for the musical stage. Research interests include Broadway and British musical theatre, migration, collaboration and performance cartography.

Dominic’s role

Dominic is a founding member of ‘Justice, the Arts and Migration’, exploring transnational migration; He’s also Co-Investigator on ‘A Different Story’, investigating the BAME-led music industry in the Midlands.

A bit of background

Dominic’s early career was as an actor-musician performing around the UK and Europe, and as a theatre director with shows including “cult fringe hit” Dragula (2002-3), the Moldovan state premiere of The Magic Flute (2006), and the Moulin Rouge-themed Spectacular Spectacular (2009), raising over £40,000 for children’s cancer charity Momentum in the West End. Recent publications include Economies of Collaboration in Performance: More than the Sum of the Parts (Palgrave, 2018), Broadway Rhythm: Imaging the City in Song (Michigan, 2017), and We’ll Have Manhattan: The Early Work of Rodgers and Hart (OUP, 2015). He is co-editor of Studies in Musical Theatre, and founder of the international conference series Song, Stage and Screen. Recent projects include the HLF / A4A-funded “Welcoming Voices” /“Memory, Migration and Music”, which explored the relationship between music and migration in Lincolnshire, and which spawned outreach activities developing community skills, and a series of world music events. He’s an associate of cultural solutions uk and a member of the board of trustees for SoundLincs.

Dominic’s written the musicals Dragula (2002-3), Sweet FA (2009), and a series of Christmas shows for Lincoln Performing Arts Centre, including Alice’s Adventures in Winter Wonderland (2014), Peter Pan (2015), Treasure Island (2016), The Adventures of Robin Hood and Maid Marian: Winter in Sherwood (2017) and Rapunzel (2018).
