Julian has recently joined Lincolnshire One Venues as Project Manager. His career includes delivering a diverse range of participatory arts projects across the region, with a speciality in performance in ‘non-velvet’ venues: from village halls to ruined monasteries.

Julian’s role

Julian manages the projects and the daily business of Lincolnshire One Venues (LOV). His role supports LOV as it fulfils its ambitions around creating high-quality participatory work in communities, the development of artists, looking to engage new audiences and building resilience in the organisation.

On a day-to-day basis that might mean attending a network meeting with partner venues, making links with community partners and potential participants, or looking for funding opportunities to build on current capacity.

A bit of background

In a very varied career Julian has worked as a producer, director and workshop leader and has run a variety of community theatre projects in and around his home city of Nottingham. He was a founder member of Hanby and Barrett (now Excavate CIC), developing ambitious models for delivering community arts activity across the region. Julian has also worked as a theatre designer, technician and stage manager and has worked on numerous opera, theatre and multimedia performances, providing technical support for projects in Britain, France and USA.

Julian recently spent a year as Programme Manager with UK Young Artists, delivering the UKYA National Festival 2016 in Derby. With a background in Contemporary Arts he also produces his own installation works from time to time. He is an assessor for Arts Council England with a specialism in Participatory and Community Theatre.

More recently Julian has branched out into event management, helping local authorities and other organisations realise their ambitions around public facing activity, be that celebrating a 30 year old computer game in a marquee on Nottingham’s Old Market Square, or launching a Country Park on the fringes of the city.

And finally…

Julian is an avid film watcher and counts a wide range of films from The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover to Diehard via Passport to Pimlico amongst his favourites. He loves a good view and will happily walk uphill for half a day to see one. In recent years he has climbed the Three Peaks (Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon), the twelve highest mountains in England, and the fifteen highest in Wales, with those expeditions raising money for Water Aid, Julian’s charity of choice.
